It all depends on what type of Industrial Firefighting you're looking to get into. Most Industrial Departments are internal meaning a particular industry {Like a Refinery or Chemical Plant} will have it's own Fire Department.
I work for one. -- It's not sitting around the Firehouse waiting for the bell. Sure we have a Firehouse / Office with a kitchen, and sort of up to date apparatus but we spend 80 - 90% of the shift in the field conducting inspections, hydrant repairs, issuing work and hydrant use permits, and testing Fire Supression Systems. We answer a fair amount of Medical Calls {Maybe 4 or 5 a week} and maybe 10 or 12 Fires a Year of which 3/4 are self extingushed or extingushed prior to our arrival. - We do more Haz-Mat Clean-ups than fire and medical combined. We're also responsible for Monthly training of our Volunteer Brigade Members and constant employee training. Sure the Pay is good considering I work internally and not for a municipality but it's a far cry from the job of a Municipal Firefighter. If it's field you want to pursue I say go for it but be prepared to work a little more than you might anticipate. |
